Estudio de Educación General en las Ciencias Sociales; estudio analítico de las áreas más importantes de antropología, sociología, psicología, ciencias políticas y economía. Se analizan los temas principales de cada materia y conceptos como cultura, sociedad, personalidad, organización, poder, recursos humanos y productivos, estructura y sistema, entre otros. El estudiante entenderá que es y cómo funciona la sociedad humana.

The course provides the student with a background on the social determinants of health and their role in the health disparities of the population. The student will develop the knowledge and basic skills to discuss how structural bias and social inequities affect the population, producing disparities in health. Through readings, critical reflections, discussions and presentations, the inequities that arise from macro social determinants (political, economic, social and public, sociocultural values), social stratification categories (income, class, gender, occupation, education, race/ethnicity), social environment (housing, neighborhood and work conditions), and social and collective behavior will be studied. At the end of the course the student will analyze the socioeconomic and political factors that affect the health of the population and challenge the achievement of equity in health at the organizational, community and social levels.

“CISO 3122. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. Three credit hours per semester. Three hours of lecture per week each semester. Prerequisite: CISO 3121. This course is directed toward a better understanding of the social forces that have produced the world in which we live. Todo proceso de ayuda requiere de destrezas en el diseño y manejo de estrategias para facilitar un proceso de cambio en los integrantes de la familia. Transformando así el funcionamiento de la familia. Se expone al estudiante a las diferentes perspectivas teóricas más utilizadas en el trabajo con familias. Se discuten investigaciones recientes en torno a los problemas que más aquejan a las familias en Puerto Rico y las estrategias para resolver dichos problemas

Introducción al concepto de la diversidad sexual desde una mirada multi e interdisciplinaria.
Se examinan las teorías biológicas, antropológicas, sociológicas, psicológicas y sociales utilizadas para explicar la diversidad sexual desde el espectro TNBILGBAQP+ (Trans, No-Binarie, Intersex, Lesbiana, Gay, Bisexual, Asexual, Queer, Pansexual+).
Además, se presenta un recuento histórico sobre la diversidad sexual. Se discuten los derechos de la comunidad sexo-género diversa desde una perspectiva de derechos humanos y civiles.
Expone al estudiantado a estudiar la diversidad sexual desde marcos teóricos del construccionismo social y feministas en el contexto del Puerto Rico actual.

Los diferentes grupos étnicos y naciones en función de nosotros y nosotras como seres humanos. Este curso está dirigido a brindar un mejor entendimiento de las fuerzas sociales que han moldeado el mundo en que vivimos. Estudiaremos los problemas básicos del ser humano en la sociedad contemporánea, tales como la incorporación de la persona en la sociedad, las presiones poblacionales, la pobreza, la riqueza, la igualdad, la equidad, el etnocentrismo y la libertad. Prestaremos particular atención al modelo de investigación científica utilizado para el desarrollo de teorías que nos ayudan a explicar la conducta de los seres humanos individual y colectivamente.

Se estudian las teorías que explican la conducta interpersonal dentro del contexto del grupo. Énfasis en las dinámicas y procesos relacionados al desarrollo de identidad social como resultado de pertenencia a un grupo, los ambientes micro y macro en los que los grupos operan y el grupo como vehículo de cambio social. Se presenta una introducción al grupo como promotor de cambio en los individuos y los factores terapéuticos que interactúan en los grupos de apoyo y consejería. Este curso se puede ofrecer en modalidad presencial y e híbrida.

I. OBJETIVOS DEL CURSO
1. Contribuir a una mejor comprensión en cuanto a la forma en que las ideas socio- políticas han ido apareciendo en el horizonte humano; quiénes han sido sus precursores y formadores y en qué circunstancias históricas estas han aparecido.
2. Contribuir a una mayor conciencia de la evolución de estas ideas y de su relación con la formación y desarrollo de los diferentes sistemas políticos; así como la influencia de estas ideas sobre los hombres y las mujeres del planeta. Algunas de estas ideas son; el liberalismo, el comunismo, la democracia.
3. Se analizará la participación de la mujer en las diferentes etapas del desarrollo de lo que hoy día llamamos Estado. Se analizarán también las razones por las cuales la mujer ha sido excluida de los procesos políticos a través de la historia.
4. Ayudar al/la a desarrollar destrezas útiles para el análisis y compresión de aquellos procesos sociales, políticos y económicos que han caracterizado las acciones y los diferentes movimientos políticos en la sociedad contemporánea.
5. Auscultar las categorías conceptuales y métodos de análisis utilizados en las ciencias sociales para explicar los procesos económicos y políticos que han contribuido al surgimiento de diferencias de clase, raza y género en la sociedad contemporánea.
6. Traer a consideración de los estudiantes las preocupaciones, perspectivas y alternativas articuladas por aquellos grupos tradicionalmente marginados de los centros de poder político y económico, para así poder definir, en un contexto más amplio, la realidad socio-política del mundo actual. Se le brindará especial atención a las consideraciones de este tipo en Puerto Rico.
Motivar al estudiante a continuar la búsqueda del conocimiento por sí mismo con el propósito de que reconozca su papel como forjador de nuevas explicaciones de lo social y que se reconozca también, así mismo como un agente de cambio dentro de la sociedad. Reconocemos, por nuestra parte, que ello tan sólo es alcanzable transformando el salón de clase en una comunidad de cuestionamiento en la cual se fomente una actitud crítica con el consecuente rechazo de concepciones apriorísticas y dogmáticas.- Enrolled students: 16

El curso discute aspectos filosóficos/científicos de las ciencias sociales que enmarcan la relevancia y utilidad de las estadísticas. Se presenta principios y diversos métodos estadísticos y su implementación en el diseño de estudios en las ciencias sociales. El curso presenta y analiza los conceptos básicos del razonamiento estadístico, así como el proceso relacionado con el cómputo de las medidas estadísticas básicas aplicables a los problemas sociopsicológicos. Se enfatiza las interpretaciones de cada medida y análisis estadístico, su utilidad y la razón para su uso según el tema de estudio. Se discutirán las técnicas de estadística descriptiva y principios de la estadística predictiva o inferencial.
